Profile: Vietnamese parliament's first female speaker

Vietnam's National Assembly (NA) on Thursday elected Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan as the country's first female house speaker in capital Hanoi.

Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan was born on April 12, 1954 in Vietnam's southern Ben Tre province. Ngan holds a master degree of economics and a bachelor degree of politics.

Prior to 2006, Ngan took over posts of director of Ben Tre department of finance, deputy minister of finance, secretary of northern Hai Duong province party committee.

Ngan has been a Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee (CPVCC) member since 2001 when she was elected to the 9th CPVCC.

In 2006, Ngan served as secretary of the Ministry of Commerce's Party Organization and deputy minister of Commerce.

From 2007 to 2011, Ngan worked as the minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs.

Ngan has been an NA deputy since 2007 when she was elected to the 12th NA.

In January 2011, Ngan was elected member of the 11th CPV Secretariat.

In July 2011, Ngan was elected vice chairperson of Vietnamese NA.

Ngan has been a Politburo member of the CPVCC since May 2013 when she was elected as an additional member of the 11th CPVCC Politburo.

On Thursday, Ngan was elected chairperson of the NA and chairperson of the National Election Council. Enditem
