For the first time, police officers of Ho Chi Minh City's District 5 went to work by bicycle from March 30, local media reported Thursday.
Police officers cycle to work to change their working styles to be closer and friendlier to local residents, daily newspaper Tuoi Tre (Youth) quoted colonel Nguyen Van Tien, head of the district's Police Bureau, as saying.
Cycling also helps policemen keep fit, save fuel costs and protect environment, Tien said, adding that they will not use bicycles for patrolling.
A total of 110 bicycles with the logo "regional police" stuck to their frames are given to police officers. Money used to buy the bicycles mainly come from local enterprises. Endit
