1st LD: Ferry sinks in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, no casualty reported

Xinhua, March 30, 2016 Adjust font size:

A ferry with dozens of people on board capsized in a river in Indonesia's Central Kalimantan province earlier Wednesday, but no casualty was reported, senior official of local disaster management agency said.

Barakat Cangkal ferry which headed to Limo town in Central Kalimantan province sank after departing from Cangkal town, Agung Wimbowinata, head of emergency unit of local disaster management agency told Xinhua by phone from the province.

Huge current resulted from poor weather was blamed for the accident, the official said.

"The current is fast which caused the accident," Wimbowinata said.

Fortunately, there was no casualty from the incident as all passengers and crew of the ship had been rescued, he said.

Ship is a popular means of transportation in Indonesia, but lack of safety standard often triggers accidents in the country. Endit
