Namibia Hockey miss out on World Cup ticket

Xinhua, March 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

South Africa qualified with both genders for the U21 Hockey World Cup, while Zimbabwe and Egypt qualified with their ladies and men's teams respectively, at the continental qualifiers, that were concluded on Monday, in Windhoek.

The continental qualifiers were hosted by the Namibian Hockey Union from March 18 to 28.

Namibia's ladies missed their qualification spot after losing to a determined Zimbabwean team 2-1 in a highly entertaining semi-final, while in the other ladies semi-final, South Africa had little trouble against Tanzania, thrashing them 31-0.

In the men's competition, Namibia was hoping for an upset against favourites South Africa in the first semi-final. South Africa however performed up to expectation and left Namibia little room for surprises, claiming their spot in the final and the World Cup with an 11-1 victory over the home team.

The outcome of the tournament ensured that Africa's top two teams per gender qualified for the World Cup tournament. The Junior World Cup (Women) 2016 is set for Chile, while the 2016 Junior World Cup (Men) is set for India. Enditem
