Tokyo stocks close lower on ex-dividend selling, caution ahead of Fed chief's speech

Tokyo stocks edged lower Tuesday as a comparatively firm yen held exporters in check, while ex-dividend selling and caution ahead of U.S. Federal Reserve Janet Yellen's upcoming speech dictated the market's direction.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 30.84 points, or 0.18 percent, from Monday to end the day at 17,103.53.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, finished 4.25 points, or 0.31 percent, lower to close at 1,377.60.
Notable decliners at the close of play comprised mining, air transportation, and pharmaceutical-linked issues, with the day's turnover totaling 1,838.2 billion yen (16.19 billion U.S. dollars). Enditem
