India confirms death of its national in Brussels terror attacks

Xinhua, March 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

India has confirmed the death of one of its nationals who had been missing in Brussels since last week's terror attacks.

Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted Monday that Belgian officials identified 28-year-old Raghavendran Ganeshan, who was working for Indian IT firm Infosys in Brussels, as one of the victims of the terror attack.

"Unfortunately, he was travelling in the same coach of the metro in which the suicide bomber blew himself up," Swaraj said. "His mortal remains are being handed over to the family in Brussels," the minister added.

The Indian Embassy in Brussels has said it is "supporting the IT expert's family in this hour of grief." "RIP Raghavendran ... Mortal remains are in process of being handed to family to be taken to India from Amsterdam airport," the embassy tweeted.

In a statement, the southern Indian city of Bengaluru-based Infosys has expressed its solidarity with the techie's family. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Raghavendran's family and with those who were injured or lost a loved one in these attacks," it said.

Some 35 people were killed and over 300 others injured in the terror attacks on Brussels airport and the city's Metro system last Tuesday. Islamic State militants have claimed responsibility. Endit
