Effigies of U.S. Republican presidential contender Donald Trump were set ablaze over the weekend as Mexicans celebrated a traditional Easter rite around the country.
Oversized paper-made figures of the controversial tycoon-turned-politician, with his iconic blonde bouffant hairdo, were burnt on Saturday and Sunday in communities across Central Mexico and other parts of the country, said local daily El Universal on Sunday.
For this year's ritual burning of Judas, Trump was "the favorite personality" to stand in for the apostle who betrayed Jesus, the daily said.
Trump has made "racist and discriminatory" remarks against Mexicans throughout his campaign, the daily said. Trump once said that if elected president, he would deport all Mexicans illegally residing in the United States and build a giant wall between the two nations to keep Mexicans out.
In the central state of Puebla, Trump's effigy was painted with swastikas and the letters "KKK," the daily said, adding that another effigy of Trump was set to be burnt at noon on Sunday in Leon, the largest city in the central state of Guanajuato. Endi
