Myanmar to survey on local rice consumption

Xinhua, March 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Myanmar plans to make survey on local rice consumption this year, according to Myanmar Rice Federation (MRF) on Saturday.

Myanmar never had the actual data on local rice consumption for 20 years. This is the big challenge for policy makers, stakeholders, investors and exporters to develop the rice sector.

The survey will be jointly carried out by MRF, Myanmar Rice and Paddy Traders Association and University of Agriculture.

The survey targets over 4,000 households living in 14 regions and states of the country.

The survey will include rice consumption amount, daily earning of each household and kind of rice they consume.

Rice is not only the main staple food of the country but also one of the main export item of the nation. Myanmar's rice export reached 433.82 million U.S. dollars for the previous 2014-2015 fiscal year.

National paddy production of Myanmar was down 2 percent annually over the past three years due to flood triggered by Cyclone Komen in late July and early August, according to the UN report. Endit
