At the end of February, France had 3.591 million people without work, a record high since September 2013 and a strong blow to the government promised to create more jobs, official data showed on Thursday.
In its monthly report, labor ministry said 38,400 more jobless claims were reported last month, or 1.1 percent more compared to a month earlier.
Year on year, the joblessness rate was up by 2.5 percent, it added.
The ministry's figures showed a 1.3-percent rise in jobless claims among people aged between 25 and 49, while those of older jobseekers increased by 0.9 percent over the period.
"This result is consistent with the movement of increases and decreases observed in nine months, reflecting a tepid recovery in economic activity," Myriam El Khomri said.
