Namibia ships medical aid to Yellow Fever stricken Angola

Xinhua, March 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

Namibia's Ministry of Health on Wednesday handed over a donation of medical supplies to the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation for shipment and handing over to the Health Authorities in Angola to help combat the yellow fever epidemic.

The medical supplies which were donated included, 100,000 units of disposable syringes, 10,000 units of paracetamol tables for adults and 5,000 units of paracetamol syrup for children, all valued at an estimated 180,000 Namibian dollars (11,772 U.S. dollars).

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International relations, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah in her remarks delivered by Deputy Minister Maureen Hinda, said, Angola has sacrificed tremendously for the people of Namibia and it is only befitting that we remain an all-weather friend to the people of Angola.

"It is appropriate of Namibia to be among the first to give a helping hand when the people of Angola are faced with a crisis of this nature," she added.

Furthermore, the Minister said, an outbreak of the Yellow Fever poses a potential health crisis and should be contained immediately.

"Such an outbreak calls for speedily humanitarian assistance as diseases do not respect borders, among others. What is today an Angolan crisis could easily be a Namibian and/or SADC crisis. An injury to Angola is an injury to Namibia," she added.

Meanwhile earlier reports from World Health Organization officials suggested that the yellow fever epidemic has killed 158 people in Angola, with more than 50 deaths occurring last month alone. Endite
