Maldives President Abdulla Yameen on Wednesday reiterated his country's firm commitment to combat terrorism following the deadly terror attacks in Brussels a day earlier.

In a letter of condolence sent to Belgium Prime Minister Charles Michel, Yameen said he was deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the bomb attacks at Brussels causing the tragic loss of lives and injuries to many.

Yameen said the Maldives strongly condemned all acts of terror and violence perpetuated against innocent people and believed that they served no purpose other than causing misery, instilling fear and distress.

"We are fully committed to the fight against terrorism and express our firm solidarity with Belgium in all its efforts to maintain national peace and harmony," Yameen said.

"The government and people of Maldives join me in conveying our deepest sympathies to the government and people of Belgium during this challenging time."

A series of explosions ripped through the Brussels airport and a metro station close to the European Union institutions on Tuesday which killed at least 34 people and injured many others.
