Pakistan, Sri Lanka to broaden economic, political ties: envoy

Pakistan and Sri Lanka have intensified engagement and undertaken substantive measures to further deepen and broaden the economic and political ties between the two countries, an envoy said here on Wednesday.

Pakistan's High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, Syed Shakeel Hussain, speaking at a ceremony to mark the 76th Pakistan Day, said here that Sri Lankan and Pakistan were in the process of refining a free trade agreement, expanding the portfolio of tradable items and encouraging bilateral investments.

He said that the recently concluded Pakistan Single country Exhibition in Colombo had contributed in promoting Pakistan, Sri Lanka economic relations by diversifying the existing trade patterns.

Hussain further expressed satisfaction on the traditionally close and mutually beneficial relationship between Sri Lanka and Pakistan in all fields. He explained that the relationship was broad-based and multifaceted covering diverse fields like diplomatic, political, commercial, defense, people to people contacts and cultural exchanges.

Hussain said that the Pakistan government was actively engaged with all neighboring countries in an effort to create a peaceful neighborhood, at the same time intensifying economic engagement with all friendly countries. Endit
