Sri Lankan president calls for united action against terrorism following Brussels attacks

Xinhua, March 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Wednesday called on the international community to unite to eliminate all forms of terrorism.

In a condolence letter sent to King Philippe of Belgium, Sirisena strongly condemned the terrorist attacks in Brussels on Tuesday, which killed more than 30 people, and left scores injured.

Sirisena conveyed the sympathies of the Sri Lankan government and its people to the victims of the attacks.

"As a nation that suffered due to ruthless terrorism for nearly three decades, Sri Lanka is always willing to extend fullest cooperation to any action aimed at eliminating the menace of terrorism from the world," he said.

"Such senseless brutal acts must be condemned by the entire world. This also reminds us the imperative need for collective action against all forms of terrorism."

Blasts ripped through the Brussels Airport and a metro station in the city on Tuesday, just days after the arrest in Brussels of a suspected participant in the November militant attacks in Paris that killed 130 people.

Sri Lanka's Foreign Ministry said there were no reports of any Sri Lankan killed or injured and the Sri Lankan Embassy in Brussels was in touch with local authorities. Endit
