Council of Europe declares Brussels attacks aim at European values

The Council of Europe (CoE) Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland declared Tuesday in Strasbourg that the attacks which struck Brussels earlier in the day had been aimed at European values.

During a press conference, the secretary general of the Strasbourg-based international institution pleaded for Europe to remain united in the fight against terrorism by relying on its foundation in human rights and the rule of law.

The prevention of radicalization should be a priority and embrace education and work in favor of inclusive societies, he added.

"These attacks of violence, at the heart of Europe, are a direct attack on our European values and freedom," President of the CoE Parliamentary Assembly Pedro Agramunt, also said in a statement released on Tuesday.

"We must firmly defend the values that unite us to live in a Europe without fear," he insisted.

Strasbourg has been the seat of the Council of Europe which has included 47 members since 1949. The city is also the seat of the European Parliament as well as for the European Court of Human Rights. Endit
