Zambia arrests 21 Zimbabwean fishermen for straying into territorial waters

Xinhua, March 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

Authorities in southern Zambia's Siavonga District have arrested 21 Zimbabwean fishermen who strayed into Zambian waters, the country's state media reported on Monday.

The fishermen were arrested on Sunday, after being found fishing on the Zambian side of Lake Kariba co-owned by the two countries, according to the Times of Zambia.

District Commissioner Loveore Kanyama said the fishermen were arrested by the police and are currently detained.

The fishermen, aged between 21 and 35 and whose identities have been withheld, will appear in court this week.

The arrest of these Zimbabwean fishermen comes barely a few months after nine Zambian fishermen were arrested by Zimbabwean authorities after being caught fishing on that country's side of the lake.

The Zambian fishermen are currently serving one year and five months with hard labor in Zimbabwe after being convicted by court. Endi
