Slovenia cautions against hate speech during refugee crisis

Xinhua, March 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Slovenian Foreign Ministry on Monday condemned a rise in hate speech related to the refugee crisis on the occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

"During the refugee and migration crisis, we are ever more frequently witness to prejudice, above all due to fear and ignorance of what is different. Also noticeable is the occurrence of hate speech," the ministry wrote in a statement, adding that poverty and security challenges contributed to the rise in intolerance.

The ministry stressed that the way to fight racism, xenophobia and discrimination was through raising awareness and educating people about human rights, the Slovenian Press Agency (STA) reported.

According to the ministry, human rights are among the priorities of Slovenia's foreign policy, which is confirmed by Slovenia's membership of the UN Human Rights Council. Endit
