Vietnam's 1st nuclear power plant to be operated by 2028

Xinhua, March 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

Vietnam's first nuclear power plant will be put into operation by 2028, said an adjusted plan on the national electricity development during 2011-2020 period with a view to 2030 on Friday.

According to the plan recently approved by Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, nuclear power plants will be developed in Vietnam to ensure stable future power supply when domestic primary energy sources are depleted.

Capacity of nuclear power in Vietnam is set to reach 4,600 megawatt (MW) by 2030 while some 32.5 billion kWh of nuclear power will be produced, accounting for 5.7 percent of the country's total electricity production, reported Vietnam's state-run radio VOV on Friday.

In the meantime, the country will speed up development of electricity from renewable energy such as wind power, solar power, and biomass power among others. Proportion of these kinds of electricity will be gradually increased in Vietnam's total electricity structure.

According to the plan, during 2016-2030, Vietnam needs investment of some 3,207 trillion Vietnamese dong (148.3 billion U.S. dollars) for the development of all kinds of electricity supply and power grid, reported VOV.

The plan was made under the estimated gross domestic production (GDP) expansion of 7 percent during 2016-2030 period. Enditem
