Fijian and Sweden officials have met to discuss preparations for the United Nations Oceans Conference to be held later this year, the Fijian government said Friday.
Fiji and Sweden are mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to co-host the conference to be held from June 5 to June 9.
Peter Thomson, Fiji's permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) has met Isabella Lovin, Sweden's minister for international development cooperation in New York to discuss preparations for the conference, according to Fiji's Department of Information.
The meeting heard briefings on measures underway at the UN to prepare a resolution for the conference, along with organizational arrangements for the conference being made in cooperation with the UN Secretariat and affiliated agencies.
It was agreed at the meeting that the conference must produce meaningful commitments and outcomes to drive the implementation of Sustainable Goal 14, with a view to reversing the current decline in oceans' health.
Sustainable Goal 14, the so-called Oceans Goal, is one of the 17 goals of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda that was universally adopted by world leaders at the UN in September 2015. Endit
