Women's Games get underway in Dominican Republic

The 2016 edition of the Women's Games was officially opened by Cristina Lizardo, President of the Dominican Republic's Senate, along with Margarita Cedeno, the Caribbean country's Vice President, local media announced on Thursday.
During the event, Lizardo, who also leads the Games' Organizing Committee, highlighted her commitment to gender equality especially in sports.
"These games are held each year, proving that women's participation is growing. We will continue to support activities that promote gender equality," said Lizardo.
The Women's Games are organized by the Dominican Republic's Sports Ministry. The event will last until March 20 and more than 1,500 athletes from Cuba, Costa Rica, Chile, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Paraguay, Puerto Rico as well as the host country, are expected to participate.
The Dominican Republic's best athletes will take part in several sports, including Veracruz 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games gold-medal winners, as well as from Toronto 2015 Pan-American Games. Endi
