New Slovak parliament to hold inaugural session on March 23

Xinhua, March 17, 2016 Adjust font size:

Slovak President Andrej Kiska announced on Thursday that the inaugural session of the new parliament will be held on March 23.

Kiska met with Smer-SD leader Robert Fico, who had been commissioned to create a new government by Friday, on Thursday.

"The leader of Smer-SD told the president that he had reached an agreement with three partners in an effort to create a governing coalition," said Martin Liptak from the press department of the President's Office.

Based on the information and in line with the Slovak Constitution, the president will convene the inaugural session on March 23, added the official.

The newly-elected legislators will take the oath and officially take up their mandates. The leaders of the parliament and parliamentary committees will be elected in the plenary.

After the inaugural session, the outgoing government will submit its resignation to Kiska. The president will then appoint the government with Fico as the head of the coalition made up of Smer-SD, the Slovak National Party, Most-Hid and Siet.

The new government will then have 30 days to present its manifesto to the parliament, which has to be approved by a simple majority. Endite
