2nd LD writethru: Myanmar president-elect submits proposal plan of forming new gov't

Xinhua, March 17, 2016 Adjust font size:

Myanmar President-elect U Htin Kyaw Thursday submitted to the Union Parliament a proposal plan of forming the new government for approval as part of the process in preparation for taking office at the end of this month.

U Htin Kyaw's proposal plan was forwarded two days after he was elected by the parliament as new President of Myanmar for the next five years.

U Htin Kyaw proposed formation of 21 ministries with 18 ministers to be appointed and the proposal is set to be discussed in the parliament on Friday.

The listed ministries are those of foreign affairs, agriculture, transport, culture and religion, natural resources and environment conservation, electric power and energy, labor and immigration, national planning and finance, industry, health, education, construction, social welfare, relief and resettlement, hotels and tourist, commerce, information, ethnic affairs, president's office, defense, home affairs and border affairs.

The names of the proposed ministers are expected to be revealed as a follow-up later.

The proposal of the number of ministries to be formed and ministers to be named is apparently cut from 36 and 32 respectively in the previous U Thein Sein's government.

Some of the ministries are found proposed to merge into one.

U Htin Kyaw of the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD), led by Aung San Suu Kyi, won the presidential election Tuesday with the highest number of votes of 360 against two other presidential candidates -- U Myint Swe (213 votes) from the military and U Henry Van Htee Yu (79 votes) from the same party, becoming the country's new president for the next five-year term .

The new government is initially set to be sworn-in on March 30 at the parliament while the handover of the duties of head of state is to be carried out at the Presidential Palace.

The newly-elected President U Htin Kyaw also set to make speech at the Union Parliament on the next day. Endit
