Ukraine requests WTO to settle trade, transit disputes with Russia

Xinhua, March 17, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Ukrainian government on Wednesday submitted a formal request to the World Trade Organization (WTO) for assistance in settling its trade and transit disputes with Russia.

The document paves the way for Kiev to initiate consultations with Moscow under the WTO framework concerning restrictions on transit of Ukrainian goods via Russian territory, said the country's Deputy Economy Minister Maksym Nefedov.

Besides, Kiev has asked the WTO to probe into case over Russia's ban on imports of some food products from Ukraine and requested the establishment of a dispute settlement panel over Moscow's embargo on Ukraine-made railway equipment, Nefedov said.

In recent months, Ukraine and Russia have exchanged a series of restrictive measures against each other.

In particular, Moscow has suspended a Russia-Ukraine free trade agreement in response to Kiev's move to join a free trade zone with the European Union and imposed a total ban on imports of agricultural products from Ukraine since Jan. 1.

In addition, Moscow has imposed some restrictions on the automobile and railway transit of goods from Ukraine via Russia.

For its part, Ukraine has canceled preferential import duties on a range of Russian goods and imposed an embargo on some products made in Russia. Endit
