Turkish police detain 47 in counterterrorism operations

Xinhua, March 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least 47 people were detained on Wednesday in counterterrorism operations across Turkey against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), Turkish media reported.

One of the most extensive operations was conducted in Istanbul's 16 districts simultaneously, Turkish state agency Anadolu reported.

Anti-terror teams, backed by police helicopters, have detained a total of 20 people including lawyers in Istanbul, Anadolu said.

The total number of detentions has reached 79 in the aftermath of a car bombing attack in the capital city of Ankara on Sunday, in which 37 people were killed, the agency added.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, the third to hit Ankara in less than five months, but the interior ministry announced that it was carried out by a member of PKK.

Turkey's Interior Minister Efkan Ala said that there may be a second attacker involved in the bombing.

Turkey's security forces have been fighting against PKK militants in the country's southeast since July last year. Endit
