Chinese cultural week kicks off in Mexico

A three-day cultural festival featuring Chinese-style dances, music performance and culinary exhibits was staged on Tuesday by Mexico's Chamber of Deputies to enhance inter-parliamentary ties with China.

It is the first time for the chamber to dedicate a cultural week to China, said Victor Manuel Giorgana Jimenez, president of the lower house's foreign relations commission.

Hailing China as Mexico's fifth-largest trading partner, Giorgana Jimenez noted the necessity to tighten links between the two countries.

"We must learn from China's legislative experience while sharing with its parliament what we have accomplished in Mexico," he said.

"The number of Chinese companies in Mexico is very small, compared to the full potential China can find here. We must seek to formalize a commercial agreement to help our economies advance," he added.

"Today, Mexico is more than just an important economic and trading partner for China and for Latin America. It is (an important partner) for the world," said Chinese Ambassador to Mexico Qiu Xiaoqi at the opening ceremony of the event called "Chinese Cultural week: A Meeting with the Silk Road." Endi
