Death warrant issued against Motiur Rahman Nizami

Xinhua, March 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

Bangladesh special tribunal, officially called International Crimes Tribunal, has issued a death warrant for convicted war criminal and Jamaat leader Motiur Rahman Nizami.

The warrant, issued on Tuesday night, came in light following the Supreme Court, the apex court's full verdict that upheld Rahman's death penalty.

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 awarded capital punishment to Rahman in October 2014.

Jamaat leader Rahman was known as the leader of Al-Badr Bahini who committed crimes against humanity during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.

Registrar Shahidul Alam Jhinuk confirmed that the tribunal's registrar's office issued the warrant around 9:10 pm.

The warrant has already been sent to the Dhaka Central Jail.

The copy of warrant has also been sent to the Dhaka district magistrate for further steps.

The Law and Home Ministries have also been informed the development.

As per the law, Rahman can file review petition to the Supreme Court within 15 days of receiving the copy of the full verdict.

If he does not file the review petition with the deadline, the government can execute him. Endit
