Spanish rail strike threatens holiday travel

Visitors and Spaniards looking to travel by rail over the Easter holidays face disruption after a decision by Spanish rail workers to call a 23-hour strike during peak holiday travel, it was reported Tuesday.

The strike, which has been confirmed by the labor union Comisiones Obreras begins at midnight on Tuesday, March 22 and will last until Wednesday evening March 23.

Workers will strike over an alleged failure by Spain's railway operators, Renfe and Adif, to comply with an agreement to hire more workers.

"The situation involves not just the loss of collective bargaining rights but also a commitment to provide jobs with the creation of 930 new positions within Renfe and Adif," confirmed the union.

Similar rail strikes were held in 2015, although unions called off a strike which had been planned for the Friday before Christmas.

The Spanish Ministry of Public Works will decide in the coming days what level of minimum services will be applied, but travelers should expect delays and cancellations on a day which sees the highest volume of travel in the year. Endit
