S. Africa ruling party files complaint against newspaper over "false report"

Xinhua, March 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

South Africa's ruling party on Tuesday filed a complaint with the country's Press Ombudsman against local newspaper the Sunday Times for a report claiming the party's leadership was controlled by the Indian Gupta family.

Spokesman for the African National Congress (ANC), Zizi Kodwa, said the story was aimed at undermining the authority of President Jacob Zuma and defaming the party's leadership.

Published on March 13, the Sunday Times report, titled "How the Guptas shopped for Finance Minister", claimed that the Gupta family had asked ANC Deputy Secretary General, Jessie Duarte, to offer the post of finance minister to Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas if he could "purge" those in the ministry who were against a deal to build nuclear plants.

Kodwa denied the report and demanded the Sunday Times' apologies to Duarte and the party.

"We further wish that this apology is published prominently in the next edition of the paper," he added. Endit
