25 endangered oryx returned to Chad from Abu Dhabi

Xinhua, March 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

Twenty-five scimitar horned oryx were returned to Chad from Abu Dhabi by the United Arab Emirates, Chad's Minister of Environment and Fisheries Brah Mahamat told Xinhua Tuesday.

These scimitar-horned oryx which are on the brink of extinction were in Abu Dhabi since 1960s. They were transported by cargo flight Monday evening to Abeche, the largest city in eastern Chad.

Equipped with satellite, the oryx were immediately transported to the wildlife area in the north of the country. "They will be kept in the protected area before being released into the wild in September," said Brah.

The return of these oryx symbolizes the return of peace in Chad, said the minister. The return of the oryx took place after the agreement signed on Sept. 4, 2014 between the Chadian Ministry of Environment and the Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi.

Several oryx were captured in the northern part of Chad and sent all over the world including the United States and the United Arab Emirates. Endit
