Violence against woman by Zambian ruling party youths sparks outrage

Xinhua, March 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

A women's rights organization in Zambia on Monday condemned the violence by alleged supporters of the governing Patriotic Front (PF) against a woman dressed in the colours of an opposition party.

During Zambia's Youth Day celebrations on Saturday, alleged youths from the PF stripped a woman dressed in the colours of the main opposition United Party for National Development.

The video clip of the attack has since spread on social media and sparked anger.

"The act by the ruling party cadres to undress the girl in public is not only criminal but barbaric," said Non-Governmental Organizations Coordinating Council , a local NGO representing women, in a statement.

The NGO has urged police to arrest the culprits, and the PF to apologize and "act against these cadres."

It has further warned against any violence against women ahead of the country's general elections scheduled for August 11. Endit
