Backgrounder: Facts and figures about war-torn Syria's past five years

Tuesday marks the fifth anniversary of the start of the Syrian civil war. Following are facts and figures about the civil war.

IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS:

-- The UN calculated that conflicts in Syria have displaced more than 4 million people.

-- Some 2.8 million children have been dropped out of school.

-- More than 250,000 people have been killed.

-- If the war were to stop this year, it would take 10 to 15 years for the per capita GDP to recover to its pre-war level.

IN 2015 ALONE:

-- 1.5 million more people are in need of humanitarian aid.

-- Almost 1 million people have been forced to flee their homes.

-- An additional 400,000 children are out of school.

-- 200,000 houses have been damaged or destroyed.
