Vietnam welcomes China to discharge water into Mekong River

Vietnam welcomes the fact that the Chinese authorities will soon deploy the plan to discharge water into downstream Mekong River, said a Vietnamese official on Monday.

Pham Thu Hang, vice spokesperson of Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) made the remark while providing more information to reporters concerning the fact that Vietnam urges China to help increase water discharge flow to overcome drought in some provinces of Vietnam.

"We think that Mekong River Basin countries have shared responsibility in protection and sustainable use of water resources, aiming at ensuring harmony between the interests of the related countries and the lives of people in the region," Hang said in a press release posted on MoFA's website on Monday.

Lately, via diplomatic channel, Vietnam has urged China to increase water discharge flow from Jinghong Hydropower Station in southwest China's Yunnan Province to help overcome drought and saltwater intrusion in some Vietnamese provinces in the Mekong Delta, said Hang.

"We welcome the fact that the Chinese authorities said they will soon coordinate and deploy the emergency water discharge plan from March 15 to April 4, 2016," according to the official.

The Mekong River flows through China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Endit
