Bulgaria seizes 16.2 tons of illegal tobacco

Xinhua, March 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Bulgarian customs officers have captured 16.2 tons of illegal tobacco at Kulata checkpoint on the country's border with Greece, officials said here on Monday.

The tobacco, which was declared as tobacco waste, was transported by a Bulgarian truck from Greece to France via Bulgaria, the National Customs Agency (NCA) said in a press release.

However, the check made by the Central Customs Laboratory categorically proved that it was actually cut smoking tobacco, and an excise of 1.4 million U.S. dollars should be paid, the NCA said. The authorities have confiscated the shipment.

Last year, the Bulgarian authorities have seized more than 28 tons of illegal smoking tobacco, the NCA said. Endit
