Roundup: Afghan militancy claims 16 lives including 12 IS fighters

Xinhua, March 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Afghan militancy and violent incidents have claimed 16 lives including 12 militants affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) group over the past 24 hours in the country, officials said Monday.

A dozen IS insurgents were killed as their explosive material went off prematurely in Achin district of the eastern Nangarhar province on Sunday, military sources confirmed Monday.

"On Sunday, IS militants were busy in making an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in a house but the device exploded prematurely, killing 12 rebels on the spot and injuring 21 others," said a statement released by Afghan army Corps 201 Salaab based in the eastern region.

The IS militants, according to the statement, had planned to plant the IED in Bazaar-e-Shaddal area of Achin district to target security forces and locals but they became the victim of their own bomb.

In a related incident, Afghan security forces captured seven members of the Taliban outfit in Nangarhar province, National Directorate for Security (NDS) or the country's spy agency said in a statement released Monday.

"A seven-member Taliban terrorist group which was attempting to conduct terrorist attack has been captured and their conspiracy to organize bloody terror offensive has been foiled," NDS said in the statement.

Similarly, three armed militants loyal to the Taliban outfit were killed in clash with security forces on a road in northern Jauzjan province on Monday, police said.

"The clash erupted after a group of Taliban militants targeted a highway linking Jauzjan provincial capital Shiberghan to Balkh provincial capital Mazar-e-Sharif in the wee hours of Monday and security forces retaliated, killing three rebels," provincial police chief Abdul Hafiz Khashi told Xinhua.

Violent incident also claimed the life of a female police personnel as unknown armed men sprayed bullet on female police officer Fawzia in Kandahar city, the capital of Taliban former stronghold the southern Kandahar province on Monday morning, provincial government spokesman Samim Khapalwak told Xinhua.
