Sichuan upsets Liaoning 96-88 to tie 1-1 in CBA finals series

Xinhua, March 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

Sichuan fought back after a 21-31 first quarter to win 96-88 over Liaoning, tied the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) finals series 1-1 here on Sunday.

Liaoning led by as much as 15 points after the beginning of the match. Former Los Angles Clippers guard Lester Hudson stormed 11 points this period including three three-pointers. All starters scored in Liaoning' s 31-21 lead in the first quarter.

Sichuan answered with a 13-0 streak to take the led for the first time 33-35. The away team outscored Liaoning 29-14 in the second quarter, during which Mike Harris contributed 15 points. Another dunk from Hamed Haddadi carried Sichuan 50-45 before the halftime.

The hosts headed into the last quarter with 69-76 down. They managed to cut the deficit down to only three points with 51 seconds to go. But He Tianju' s layup was the last two points for Liaoning and the last season' s runner-up lost 88-96 at home.

Mike Harris had game high 29 points for Sichuan and 15 rebounds. Hamed Haddadi demonstrated dominance in the paint with 25 points and 26 rebounds. Zhang Chunjun and Justin Dentmon respectively scored 18 and 12.

Hudson again topped Liaoning with 28 points. Guo Ailun and Li Xiaoxu contributed 19 and 16 each.

Liaoning was out-rebounded 50-63 at home.

"Rebounds, turnovers and low efficiency in offense led to our failure tonight," said Guo Shiqiang, coach of Liaoning. "It' s impossible to win when your opponents had 13 more rebounds than you."

"It's glad to win after we lost the first game," Sichuan coach Yang Xuezeng said with a happy tune. "Our foreign players set the examples and domestic players showed what they got, they trusted each other and really worked together."

The next three matches will be played in Chengdu, Sichuan's home court. Endit
