2 Palestinians found dead in tunnel linking Gaza, Egypt

Xinhua, March 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

Two Palestinian workers were found dead on Saturday night in a tunnel under the borderline area between southern Gaza Strip and Egypt, medics and security sources in Gaza said.

Medical sources in the town of Rafah said rescue teams took out the two bodies from inside a collapsed tunnel.

On Thursday eight tunnels workers were declared missing, six rescued and survived, while searches for other two workers, in their early 20s, continued until they were found dead in the tunnel on Saturday night.

Security officials in Rafah said the eight workers were trying to renovate the tunnel after it collapsed several months ago due to the flooding of salty seawater by the Egyptian army.

In September, 2015, the Egyptian army started pumping salty seawaters into Palestinian tunnels used to smuggle goods, as Israel has been imposing a tight blockade on the Gaza Strip since 2007. Endit
