Riot breaks out at Alabama prison: reports

Xinhua, March 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

A riot broke out at a prison in the southeastern U.S. state of Alabama early Saturday morning, U.S. media reported.

The unrest occurred at the Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore, about 50 miles (80 km) north of Alabama's only saltwater port Mobile, according to local news website AL.com. The news website quoted local authorities as saying that the inmates were "contained."

The cause for the riot and possible casualties were unclear at the moment. However, AL.com reported alleged social media posts by prisoners, which showed that fires were set and beds overturned.

According to the website of the prison, the facility was officially opened in December 1969, and is the only facility in the state that carries out executions. Endi
