Sun Yat-sen's death anniversary commemorated in Taiwan

Xinhua, March 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou and some other officials visited a Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei on Saturday to mark the 91st anniversary of Sun's death.

Amid light rain, Ma arrived at the hall Saturday morning to pay his tribute to Sun Yat-sen, a revered revolutionary leader who played a pivotal role in overthrowing imperial rule in China, by bowing three times towards Sun's statue and presenting a wreath.

Recently, a Taiwan legislator proposed to remove the portraits of Sun Yat-sen from schools and government buildings in the island. Late last month, red paint was thrown on a statue of Sun Yat-sen in eastern Taiwan.

After visiting the hall with Ma, former deputy speaker of the island's legislature Hung Hsiu-chu called those moves to disgrace Sun as "violence" that are both irrational and illegal.

"Our generations should carry forward the spirit of Sun Yat-sen, instead of throwing filth at his contribution," Hung said.

Sun was born in 1866 and died in 1925. He is known to the Chinese as a great revolutionary and statesman for his leading role during the 1911 Revolution, which overthrew the imperial Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and put an end to more than 2,000 years of feudal rule. Endi
