Traffic accident kills 18 in Egypt's Sinai

Xinhua, March 10, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least 18 people were killed in a traffic accident in South Sinai on Wednesday evening, according to the Egyptian Interior Ministry.

A passenger microbus collided with a truck in Abu Rdees-Al-Tur highway in South Sinai, a statement said, killing 18 people including 12 police recruits and four students.

Road accidents are common in Egypt, claiming about 12,000 lives every year, according to the World Health Organization.

In early February, at least 11 were killed and over 100 wounded in separate car and train accidents in the most populous Arab state.

Lack of highway monitoring systems, poor road maintenance and negligence of traffic rules are behind the high rate of road accidents in Egypt. Endit
