Xinhua, March 10, 2016 Adjust font size:

Fabian Lustenberger extended his contract with Hertha Berlin ahead of scheduled, the Bundesliga team confirmed via the club's official homepage on Wednesday.

Lustenberger, who plays since 2007 for the "Old Lady", penned a contract extension until June 2019.

"Fabian is not only our skipper but also a cornerstone of the team. During our talks we quickly realized that both sides want to continue the path in the future," Berlin's sporting director Michael Preetz said.

The 27-year-old defender joined Hertha Berlin from Swiss outfit FC Luzern to make 215 appearances and seven goals ever since. Berlin's team captain is moreover since 2013 part of Switzerland's national team and played three caps.

"I feel very well at Hertha Berlin and I am happy to stay here at least until 2019. Berlin has become my second home," Lustenberger said.

The "Hertha" occupy the 3rd place in the Bundesliga standings. They encounter fourth-placed Schalke at the opener of the 26th round on Friday. Endit
