Polish deputy FinMin dismissed over banking comments

Xinhua, March 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo dismissed deputy Finance Minister Konrad Raczkowski over controversial statements he made about the banking sector, government spokesman Rafal Bochenek confirmed Wednesday.

The dismissal was requested by Finance Minister Pawel Szalamacha. Last week, during a seminar at the Warsaw School of Economics, Raczkowski claimed that several banks in Poland would collapse in 2016.

"Several banks are 'toxic' and they will collapse later this year," Raczkowski said.

He argued that the bank failures would not be the effect of a new banking tax but of incompetent management and supervision.

After these comments, Szalamacha stepped forward to assure the public the Polish banking sector was stable and asked Raczkowski to provide an explanation for his statement. Endit
