1st LD: One Israeli killed, nine injured in ongoing stabbing attack in Jaffa

Xinhua, March 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

One Israeli was killed and nine others were injured in stabbing attacks carried out by one attacker in Jaffa, where U.S. Vice President Joe Biden is attending a conference.

The assailant stabbed dozen of bystanders in several locations, starting at the Jaffa port, then continuing to stab people near the clock tower square, as well as on a location hundreds of meters to the north near a Tel Aviv seaside restaurant.

One Israeli was killed, at least four were seriously wounded, four others were moderately wounded and one person was lightly injured, the Israeli emergency services said.

They were evacuated to the Ichilov hospital in Tel Aviv and the Wolfson hospital in Holon, south of Tel Aviv. The attacker was shot and killed by Israeli police forces, Samri said.

Biden had at that time attended a conference with former Israeli President Shimon Peres at the Peres Center for Peace, located about two to three kilometers south of the scenes of attacks.

These attacks join others that took place earlier on Tuesday afternoon, one at Petach Tikva, a suburb of Tel Aviv situated east of the city, and one in east Jerusalem.

An Israeli was moderately wounded in the Petach Tikva stabbing attack and the assailant, said to be a "minority" -- meaning Arab -- was shot and killed by police forces, according to the Israeli polices.

It is not clear whether the attacker is an Arab Israeli or a Palestinian living in east Jerusalem or the West Bank, occupied Israeli territories. Arab Israelis are Palestinians who stayed in Israel after the 1948 War and are citizens of Israel, making up 20 percent of the population.

Shortly after the Petach Tikva attack, an attacker shot two Israeli policemen on Salah a-Din street in east Jerusalem, wounding one critically and another moderately. He was shot and killed by police forces, according to a statement, adding he was in possession of a Carl Gustav rifle.

At least 28 Israelis have been killed in stabbing, shooting and car-ramming attacks since October, when the wave of violence started. More than 170 Palestinians have been killed, some in clashes with Israeli security forces, while others were gunned down after carrying out attacks against Israelis.

Israeli leaders say the Palestinian Authority incites violence, whereas the Palestinians charge it is the result of 49 years of Israeli occupation of the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip territories, where they wish to establish a Palestinian state, in accordance with the two-state solution.
