Two people were killed and four others went missing after an overloaded boat carrying around 40 people capsized in eastern Indian state of Odisha, officials said Tuesday.
The boat capsized on Monday evening in River Brahmani of Dhenkanal district, about 75 km north of Bhubaneswar city, the capital of Odisha.
"The boat capsized near Chandipal river bank," an official said. "The ill-fated boat was ferrying around 40 devotees, all local residents, to a Hindu temple on the occasion of Mahashivratri, a religious festival."
Police officials said most of the people aboard the boat were rescued except six.
"Body of an 18-year-old girl identified as Rubina Rout was fished out late last night and body of a nine-year-old boy identified as Satya Narayan Swain was recovered this morning," a police official said.
"Search for the missing four is under way."
The Odisha government Monday ordered a probe into the boat capsize.
"District collector has been asked to probe the matter and efforts are on to trace the four missing persons," Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra, a senior government official told media.
Hopes of survival for the missing persons according to officials seem to be fading with every passing hour. Endit
