UN chief condemns terrorist attacks in Tunisian border town

Xinhua, March 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday condemned the terrorist attacks on police and army posts in Ben Guerdane, a town near Tunisia's border with Libya.

Heavy fighting erupted early Monday between Tunisian forces and a group of militants who carried out the attacks. Some 29 militants, at least five civilians and four security personnel were killed in the clashes.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Ban expressed his condolences to the families of the victims as well as to the people and government of Tunisia and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.

"The Secretary-General reiterates the commitment of the United Nations to stand with the people of Tunisia as they confront the scourge of terrorism and work to preserve the gains of the revolution," said the statement.

Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi denounced the attacks as unprecedented and coordinated assaults, saying they might have been aimed at controlling the border region with Libya.

Since last year, Tunisia has suffered several terrorist attacks. The extremist group Islamic State has claimed responsibility for some of them. Endi
