Nepalese President expresses happiness over growing participation of women in politics in Nepal

epalese President Bidya Devi Bhandari has expressed happiness over growing participation of women in Nepali politics in the recent years.

Bhandari, who was elected as the first female president of the Himalayan nation on October 28 last year, said that women's participation in politics is encouraging in the recent years.

During an exclusive interview with Xinhua News Agency on Monday in Kathmandu, the president said that the new Constitution promulgated in September last year in the Himalayan nation has ensured political and fundamental rights to Nepali women.

"The new Constitution is not discriminatory to women at all. I believe this has given more political and fundamental rights to women," she said.

"Obviously, women have got more political rights through the new Constitution. Now we must pay special attention to improving economic condition of women so as to they can contribute more for national economy in the coming days," Bhandari told Xinhua on the occasion of International Women's Day 2016, which falls on March 8.

On the occasion of International Women's Day, the president highlighted Nepali women's role in establishment of democracy in the country and went on to say that their roles should be expanded for country's peace and development.

President Bhandari also extended best wishes to the women in China on the occasion of the International Women's Day.

While talking about China-Nepal relations, the president was of the view that the two countries needs to work to further enhanced bilateral ties as closest neighbors in the coming days. Enditem
