UN, Algeria call for more efforts to end violence against women

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said here on Monday that stopping violence against women stands among top priorities of the UN development program for 2030.

Ban made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the 5th General Meeting of the Kigali International Conference on the role of security organs in combating violence against women and girls.

"Our goal is to achieve equality between sexes and designing a world free from all forms of violence and discrimination," the UN chief said, adding that police services play a key role to end violence against women.

Meanwhile, Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal said at the conference that violence against women is among the most serious violations of human rights.

"Despite colossal efforts to eradicate this plague, we need to work more to end all forms of violence," Sellal said. Endit
