Bolivia, Russia sign deal to build nuclear research center

Xinhua, March 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

Bolivia and Russia have signed an agreement to build a 300-million-U.S. dollar nuclear research and development center, Bolivian President Evo Morales announced Sunday.

The center will be Latin America's largest and the most modern one, said Morales, adding that "we must be proud of this scientific venture."

Designed for "medical and peaceful uses," the center will feature a low-grade nuclear reactor and a research laboratory.

Bolivian Energy Minister Luis Alberto Sanchez inked the deal with Russia's Rosatom Director General Sergey Kiriyenko.

Kiriyenko said the center will help Bolivia create jobs, expand scientific knowledge, raise product quality and improve public health.

The construction of the center is expected to be completed in four years. Endit
