Iran, Turkey's cooperation on diverse issues essential: Iranian vice-president

Xinhua, March 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

Tehran and Ankara's interests are interlinked amid potentials for cooperation in political and economic areas, a high-level Iranian official said Saturday.

Iran assumes a special status for Turkey in its foreign policy, as Tehran's foreign policy is based on expansion of ties with its neighbor, Iran's First Vice President Es'haq Jahangiri said at a joint press conference with visiting Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.

The two held "useful" talks on bilateral and regional issues Saturday morning and stressed that the stability and security in the region are indispensable for the interests of both states, Jahangiri said.

Besides political issues, numerous areas of cooperation, including oil, energy, transport, customs, and tourism can bring two countries together, he said, adding that Iran expects Turkish investors' involvement in its projects.

The next Joint Cooperation Commission of the two neighbors will convene in Turkey next month aiming to materialize a 30-billion-U.S.-dollar bilateral trade target, he added.

Davutoglu also urged Tehran and Ankara to join hands in resolving political issues in the Middle East, saying Turkish private sector is ready to join Iran's stock market and to invest in Iran.

Discussions on financial cooperation, banking, trade and energy will be on the agenda of upcoming commission meeting, the top Turkish diplomat said.

The economies of Turkey and Iran complement each other, which is also a crucial factor for the development of other regional economies, Davutoglu added.

Heading a high-ranking economic delegation, Davutoglu arrived in Tehran for an official visit on Friday night. The two countries also plan to sign several memorandums of understanding during his two-day stay in Tehran. Endit
