Palmeiras win in Copa Libertadores

Xinhua, March 4, 2016 Adjust font size:

Palmeiras beat Argentine club Rosario Central 2-0 in the Copa Libertadores on Thursday evening.

On a soaking wet night at the Allianz Parque in Sao Paulo, Palmeiras goalkeeper Fernando Prass was the man-of-the-match, saving a second half penalty to keep his side ahead.

Following a difficult start to the year and with the pressure mounting on coach Marcelo Oliveira, the first half performance was arguably the best Palmeiras have managed in 2016.

Argentine striker Jonatan Cristaldo opened the scoring for the Brazilian club when he latched onto a pass from playmaker Dudu.

Rosario came out after the break in search of an equaliser, but was denided by Prass who saved a spot kick from Marco Ruben to maintain Palmeiras' slender lead.

Three minutes into injury time, Agustin Allione wrapped up the points after a trying second 45 minutes.

Palmeiras now top Group 2 with four points from their opening two matches.

Palmeiras will host Nacional of Uruguay in the next match on March 9. Endit
