EC proposes to ratify int'l treaty to fight violence against women

Xinhua, March 4, 2016 Adjust font size:

The European Commission (EC) proposed for the European Union (EU) to ratify the Council of Europe's Istanbul Convention, a comprehensive international treaty on combating violence against women and domestic violence, according to the press release of the EC on Friday.

This would reaffirm once more the EU's solid commitment to fight gender-based violence, said the press release.

The Istanbul Convention of the Council of Europe, which has been presented in 2011 and entered into force in August 2014, is the most comprehensive international treaty on combating violence against women and domestic violence, according to the press release.

For the next step, this proposal to accede to the Istanbul Convention would be discussed in the Council of Ministers and in the European Parliament, whose consent is needed for the conclusion of the Convention by the EU.

By now, 12 EU member states have already ratified the Convention, while a further 13 member states have signed it but not yet ratified.

More signatures and ratifications are expected over the coming months, added the press release. Endit
