Rail passenger flow hits record high during Spring Festival travel rush

Xinhua, March 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

China's rail system handled 325 million trips during the Spring Festival travel rush, which ended Thursday, data from China Railway Corporation (CRC) showed.

The record figure is a 10.2-percent increase from 2015, with the number of daily passengers peaking on February 13 as people returned to work after the week-long Lunar New Year holiday, according to CRC.

China's Lunar New Year starts on Feb. 8 this year, with the public holiday running from Feb. 7 to 13. Often described as the world's largest annual migration, this year's 40-day holiday travel period, or Chunyun in Chinese, began on Jan. 24.

Most of the Chunyun travelers are college students and people traveling back home. Lunar New Year is one of the few holidays where they have enough time to visit family in their hometowns. Endi
